Tech Tonic : BlackBerry founders no longer top dogs

As the founders and CEOs of Research in Motion, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis were kings of the smartphone not so long ago. How the mighty have fallen - BlackBerrys are now lagging behind iPhones and Androids in the race for smartphone supremacy and as a result, Balsillie and Lazaridis are no longer the top dogs at RIM, stepping down as CEOs. Anthony DeRosa doesn’t see a bright future for RIM or BlackBerry anytime soon as the fledgling company plays catch-up.

I hate to say I told you so, but yes, yes we did. Actually, I don’t see RIM being one of the top three players once the Windows phone has picked up it’s traction in combination with Nokia. And that would mean they’d be on the bottom of the list since there are only 4 real players left.

Sure you could say there are loads of players in terms of manufacturers but if you look at the smartphone market and its operating systems, there’s only really iOS, Android, Windows and Blackberry. And while I’m writing this, I actually don’t consider Blackberry a smartphone OS, because it’s actually a little dumb. It’s like Android is iOS’s ugly but capable sister and Windows is the way to old but still trying to be cool dad who has a retarded bastard son named Blackberry. Yes you can communicate with it, but if you ask it to point directions, well you don’t want to ask it for something as simple as directions.

The only way, and I really mean this, for RIM to be one of the three top players in the coming feature, would be if they dropped Blackberry OS and adapted Android or Windows OS. This could be by acquisition or through partnering but the Blackberry OS has sustained too much damage.

I could be wrong of course, if they’d release the new Blackberry OS soon and it would be amazing they might stand a chance. But hey, who am I kidding, We’ve played with Blackberry OS 10 and it isn’t amazing to say the least.

Update:

They now also know how an open ended hashtag campaign can end up in a ‘Bashtag’ campaign. Just like Mac Donalds, they received tons of negative responses from the #BeBold campaign on Twitter. Source

That just shows when your product already has a negative social equity, you shouldn’t do open ended campaigns like these.
